Suez Methanol Derivatives Company (SMD) was founded on 4 March 2013 according to rules and provisions of the Egyptian law of Investment guaranties and incentives number 8 issued in 1997, governed by the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum & Mineral Resources (MoPMR), as one of the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (Echem) affiliates with a total investment cost of about 120 MMUSD.

SMD is seeking to be one of the largest integrated methanol derivatives producers in the MENA region through a world scale capacity plant, embracing a sustainable state of the art technologies and highly competent workforce under a definitive operational excellence framework.

SMD plant is located in Damietta port, Damietta, Egypt, and will manufacture premium-grade methanol derivatives including Aqueous Formaldehyde, Urea Formaldehyde Concentrate -85 (UFC-85), Urea Formaldehyde Resin (UFR) and Sulfonated Naphthalene Formaldehyde (SNF). These products have a wide array of applications and uses in agriculture, adhesives, automobiles, pharmaceuticals and construction fields.
